ESRI will present an interactive and fun presentation of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) that students can use to immediately get a new job!

The students will follow a use case around collecting data in Boyle Heights (asset data as well as data the group will collect via a survey they’ll create). They will then create a web map from the data, then create a simple dashboard.

The tools used by the students will be the same as those used by workers with UPS, FedEx and hundreds of thousands of workers.

The skills that students learn in this presentation are skills that can use immediately in a job hunt or interview!

The fields of software, computing and computer science are plagued by tremendous underrepresentation of women, African Americans, and Hispanics.

In high school, the Advanced Placement exam in Computer Science has the worst gender diversity across all courses, with 78 percent participation by men and 22 percent by women. Participation by students of color is 13 percent. These underrepresented groups represent 65 percent of the entire US population!
